Scholarships at the University of the Witwatersrand

The African Centre for Migration & Society (ACMS) at the University of the Witwatersrand calls applications for MA and Ph.D. scholarships. The scholarships are offered by DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) as part of its ‘In-Region Scholarship Programme South Africa’.

Prizes

Full scholarships at the University of the Witwatersrand are available for Four MA and Five Ph.D. students accepted for the Migration and Displacement program at ACMS in 2021.

Eligibility 

For the pre-selection, ACMS will use the following eligibility criteria. To be eligible, applicants

• Must be nationals or permanent residents of a Sub-Saharan African country (excluding South Africa);
• Must have completed their last university degree not more than 6 years ago at the time of application;
• MA applicants must have an Honours degree or equivalent with a total aggregate mark of at least 65%;
• Ph.D. applicants must have an MA degree with a total aggregate mark of at least 70%;
• Furthermore, must have been accepted to study for MA/Ph.D. in Migration and Displacement at ACMS (please see application information here).

Application 

In order to apply, candidates must send the following materials to  naledi.mazibuko1@wits.ac.za

• A cover letter summarising qualifications, professional experience, and reasons for interest in the Migration and Displacement program.
• A complete CV.
• Copies of transcripts and degree certificates;
• SAQA evaluation (for foreign qualifications);
• A short research proposal (1500 words maximum) outlining the proposed research project;
• A writing sample of not more than 10,000 words (e.g., a chapter; article; term paper).

The University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg is a multi-campus South African public research university situated in the northern areas of central Johannesburg. It is more commonly known as Wits University or Wits. The university has its roots in the mining industry, as do Johannesburg and the Witwatersrand in general. In addition to that, founded in 1896 as the South African School of Mines in Kimberley, it is the third oldest South African university in continuous operation.
