Provinces Disagree over Reopening of Educational Institutions

The reopening of educational institutions from June 1 has met with opposition by the majority of provinces. This is because there is a fear of a drastic increase in coronavirus infections.

On Wednesday, during the Inter-Provincial Education Ministers Conference (IPEMC), Punjab, Balochistan, and Sindh provinces unanimously agreed that if the schools are reopened the virus can infect children.

However, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) supported the idea of restoring educational activities from June 1st. They wanted to lessen the educational loss of students. IPEMC was chaired by the Federal Minister for Education Shafqat Mahmood in which all the provincial education ministers participated via video link.

Because of the disagreement among the provinces, it was decided by the participants that the matter must be rested in the hands of the National Coordinating Committee (NCC) on coronavirus.

On Tuesday, the federal cabinet decided to further ease the lockdown after May 9th. However, the final decision in the regard will be taken by NCC that was formed on 14th March to effectively fight the spread of coronavirus across Pakistan.

The NCC comprises chief ministers, surgeon general of the Pakistan Army, and Inter-Services Intelligence, Inter-Services Public Relations representatives, and the director-general military operations.

The federal cabinet permitted including the inclusion of 61 food and non-food items in the quality control list of Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA). Also, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was approved with the United States to raise funds for the relief fund of Prime Minister.
