Duties

•The incumbent reviews and monitors activities in the ASEAN region. Moreover, he/she assesses trends that might affect the overall political situation and the political impact of intra-regional issues on the ASEAN-UN Comprehensive Partnership.

•Additionally, he/she analyses political and related events within the ASEAN region with a view to providing early warning advice to senior UN officials.

•Furthermore, the candidate drafts notes, background papers as well as talking points, speeches and other correspondence for senior UN officials.

•Also, he/she acts as focal point for collection and analyses of information on political issues of assignment, in coordination with DPPA-DPO headquarters as well as regional presences.

•The candidate conceptualizes, coordinates arranges and participates in ASEAN-UN collaborative activities and events. Carries out other assignments in the region.

•Moreover, the incumbent meets regularly with operational teams including UN staff, national and ASEAN member state officials as well as ASEAN Secretariat staff to coordinate work on joint reports and progress on the ASEAN-UN Plan of Action.

•Also, he/she provides up-to-date information to senior officials regarding substantive political matters and country or regional issues and makes recommendations on actions to take.

•Furthermore, the candidate maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments as well as ASEAN Dialogue Partners, etc.


Qualifications for Vacancy for Political Affairs Officer at the UN

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related. Additionally, the Un may accept first-level university degree in combination with two years of qualifying experience in lieu of the advanced university degree.

A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, etc.

Also, experience in political analysis related to peace and security in Southeast Asia as well as UN partnerships with regional organizations.

Likewise, experience related to ASEAN as well as field experience in the region.
English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. Furthermore, for this position fluency in English is required. Additionally, knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
