HEC Orders all Universities to either start Online Classes or Abandon Current Semester

Due to the uncertain situation amid the coronavirus pandemic, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) has asked all the universities to either start online teaching or just abandon the current semester.

In a media briefing the HEC Chairman Dr. Tariq Banuri said, “If lockdown restrictions are lifted by early June, universities can return to business as usual. But if there are further delays, there will be no options other than starting online education or suspending the current semester.”

Furthermore, Dr. Tariq Banuri said that HEC has undertaken two-pronged strategy to support the efforts of the government in controlling the spread of coronavirus as well as resuming the academic activities.

Just going on with online education during the pandemic can make sure that the efforts made by the government don’t go in vain.  All universities have been asked by HEC to train their staff and resume academic activities online.

A technical support committee (TSC) has been instituted by HEC for the capacity building of teachers. It will help the staff of the universities to adapt to the online mode of education. Also TCS will guide universities in resuming online classes by deploying the Learning Management System (LMS)

A National Knowledge Bank (NKB) has also been set up HEC to make sure that teachers can access a wide range of academic resources for better quality education. Online tutorials are being prepared by the National Academy for Higher Education (NAHE) for teachers so that they improve their skills .
